Cartilage and connective tissues help support and protect joints in the body. Throughout life, we place enormous stress on these structures. Movement generates an electrical field around each joint that plays an important role in the continual regeneration of these tissues. When inflammatory joint disorders or osteoarthritis are present, there is a disturbance in this electrical field. The result is pain, more inflammation, and loss of physical function -- in short, arthritis.
Pain is the major complaint of arthritis sufferers. This occurs from inflammation around the joint, damage to the joint surfaces, and muscle strains caused by forceful movements against stiff joints and fatigue. Osteoarthritis begins in the cartilage and eventually leads to the two opposing bones wearing against each other (the “bone-on-bone” condition that usually leads people to replace their hips and knees.) Initially, the condition starts with minor pain with activity, but the pain can become continuous and even occur while sleeping. The pain can be debilitating and prevent one from doing any type of activity.
Pulsed Signal Therapy or PST provides the joint with impulses that are similar to those occurring in a moving healthy joint. It uses pulsating electromagnetic energy to promote healing in injured or degenerated tissues. By mimicking the body's natural electrical signal it activates the normal healing and regeneration capabilities. It stimulates the cartilage and connective tissue to increase production of proteoglycans and collagen (the building blocks of cartilage) to aid in repairing the cartilage defects. PST can help heal tissues like hyaline cartilage, ligaments, tendons and joint capsules, and reverse the changes in joint structure caused by inflammation. PST is unique because it merges traditional and non-traditional medical care. The result from PST is not only sustainable pain relief, but also a measurable regeneration. In short, pets can become more mobile again and can enjoy life more. Better joint movement leads to further improvement of overall joint function.
The technology used in Pulsed Signal Therapy is based on years of research and has been subjected to rigorous scientific review in university laboratories and medical schools. In human clinical trials about 80% of patients showed significant improvement, experienced a reduction in pain and inflammation combined with an increase in physical function. Many patients were able to cut back on their pain medication or discontinue it altogether. Some patients are free of all symptoms following treatment. It has shown positive results regardless of whether the patient is young or old or whether the problems result from age, injury, chronic degeneration or inflammatory disease.
Because the signal delivered through the device is of a very low energy range (one one-thousandth of the energy of an MRI machine) PST is extremely safe. In thousands of patients treated worldwide there have been absolutely no adverse side effects reported. The signal produced by the machine reproduces the signal already naturally present in the body. PST is non-invasive and pain-free. Patients may sometimes feel a slight tingling or sensation of warmth in the area being treated. Some patients may temporarily experience a slight increase in the normal pain they feel in the affected joint. This is a positive reaction brought about by the reconstruction and healing occurring in the injured area.
The PST-initiated recovery process begins within the first few treatments. It has been empirically proven that this recovery process initiated by PST may cause pain relief within the initial three treatments. A study performed by Laurie McCauley, DVM, CCRT and empirical data gathered during three decades of studies, showed that the overall pain score and daily functions begin to drastically improve 4 to 6 weeks post PST treatment. PST treatments have been proven to last for at least 2 years.
A treatment with the PST machine involves nine sessions that are one half-hour each, for small animals. For horses it takes nine one-hour sessions. (Although FDA approval for PST human use is being pursued in the U.S., it is currently limited to animal use.) The device is taken home, and treatments are done in the comfort of your home environment over 9 consecutive days.
At Aulternatives, our goals with Pulsed Signal Therapy are to relieve pain, improve mobility, decrease dependence on prescription anti-inflammatory drugs, and to improve the quality of your pets’ lives. Dr. Ault uses PST in combination with other holistic and conventional supplements and treatments, which will bring optimal results.
