Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of medicine which re-balances the total energy system of animals' bodies to facilitate healing and health.  There are precise locations on or near the surface of the body known as acupuncture points, which when stimulated with fine needles, can produce changes in the internal organs' functions, or relieve pain.  This technique has been used in China for over 3000 years, as well as in Japan, Korea, and India, and has recently been rediscovered in the West.

How does acupuncture work?

Veterinary acupuncture utilizes the ancient philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which views the body as a unique energetic system.  The energy force, or "Qi", flows through a network of channels called "meridians" which connect all body organs.  When Qi flows in a smooth and harmonious manner, there is health.  When the Qi becomes unbalanced or the flow is impaired, disease may result.  Acupuncture aids in re-balancing this energy and restoring its normal flow, thus restoring health.  Other effects include relieving pain, improving internal organ functions, and increasing the animal's general well-being.

When should I consider acupuncture for my animals?

There are several conditions where veterinary acupuncture may be appropriate as the primary or adjunctive (supportive) therapy.  These include:  gastrointestinal disorders, repiratory disorders, neurologic disorders, musculoskeletal disorders (such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, and disk disease), reproductive, endocrine, and metabolic disorders, skin diseases, urinary disorders, and behavior problems.  In addition, regular acupuncture can treat minor sports injuries as they occur, and help keep muscles and tendons resistant to injury.  If your animals are involved in any athletic endeavor, such as racing, jumping, endurance, cutting, agility, trail, or showing, acupuncture can help keep them in top physical condition, enhancing their performance.

Does acupuncture cure everything?

Acupuncture can be the treatment of choice for many conditions, and perhaps the only treatment for some conditions.  It may also be combined with other treatment modalities such as chiropractic, herbal and nutritional therapies, or homeopathy for maximum effect.  The holistic veterinarian may combine TCM and standard physical exams with blood tests, ultrasounds, biopsy or other tests for an accurate diagnosis.  A holistic approach that utilizes both Eastern and Western diagnostic and treatment modalities will bring optimal results.

What effects can I expect from acupuncture?

Insertion of acupuncture needles is virtually painless.  Most animals become very relaxed, even sleepy, during treatment.  Acupuncture may cause sensations of tingles, cramps, or numbness in the muscles, which indicates Qi flow through the meridians.  Following an acupuncture session, your animal may show an increase in energy, sleeping more soundly, improvement of the problem, or even a temporary (24-48 hours) worsening of the problem.  These are all indications that some physiological effects are taking place, as the body's energy redirects itself.  Patients often start with one to three treatments per week for 4 to 6 weeks.  A positive response is usually seen by the third treatment.  At that point, treatments are tapered off to an interval that keeps them symptom free.
