What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the practice of spinal adjustment or manipulation to relieve spinal subluxations. These subluxations, or misalignments, cause interference with the nervous system which directs all functions in the body. When nerves are "pinched" or impaired, the information carried by them is affected. The result can be pain, muscle spasm, weakness, behavioral changes, and even internal organ disease. When subluxations are detected, specific low-force techniques are used to gently move the misaligned vertebrae into alignment. (This technique is much safer than the "long-lever", high force methods used by some adjusters). This restores the nerve function, which ultimately restores muscle and organ function.
How do I know if my animal needs Chiropractic care?
There are several signs your animal may display that can indicate a possible spinal subluxation. These may include: back, neck, leg or tail pain; performance or movement problems; changes in behavior or personality such as crabbiness, lethargy, or just not acting right; changes in posture such as sitting unevenly or holding the head down; weight loss due to pain or uneven muscle development; difficulty with stairs or jumping; roaching topline or "hunters bump"; trouble bending, taking the correct lead or engaging the hindquarters; and pain when tightening the girth or mounting in the saddle. If any of these signs are present, your animal may have a vertebral subluxation which needs to be corrected. In most cases, only a few adjustments are needed to return the spine to proper alignment and function. If the problem has been long-standing or severe, it may take several treatments to restore health. Chiropractic care is best administered early in the course of a disease, and on a preventive maintenance schedule to keep your animals on an optimum plane of health.
The Benefits of Chiropractic
Chiropractic care offers a natural, drug-free adjunct to your animals' total health care. While regular veterinary care is vital for treating disease, chiropractic is now recognized as vital for health maintenance. The spine houses the nerve center of the body (spinal cord), so even minute misalignments can interfere with the normal transmission of electrical impulses. While "back pain" is the most common symptom of this, the other parts of the body may be affected as well, with everything from ear infections to bladder incontinence. Left untreated, subluxations can lead to irreversible spinal degeneration.
Regular chiropractic exams and adjustments assure that subluxations are detected and corrected early, before they result in long term or serious health problems. The causes of subluxations are varied: trauma, overworked muscles, tension, toxins from the environment and medications, and even emotional factors can play a role in verterbral misalignments. Making chiropractic a regular part of your animals' care results in improved overall health, and a longer and more comfortable athletic life.
